Entering endodontic retreatments (Re-RCT) on the Portfolio
Last Updated 3 years ago

Endodontic retreatment (Re-RCT) is not part of the undergraduate programme so is not available to enter on the Portfolio. Occasionally, a tutor may permit you to participate in an Re-RCT for a patient, but only if the following conditions are met:

  • The tutor feels comfortable in you doing this procedure.
  • The tutor can provide you with the required support, with no detriment to the teaching and supervision to the other students.
  • The procedure itself is particularly straight forwards and the removal of the old root-filling is very easy.

You will have had extensive support and assistance from your tutor (especially in the removal of the GP component). Which, in effect, from a learning experience, makes the procedure a conventional RCT. You can make a note in your visit description/reflection that it was an endodontic retreatment and reflect on how it makes you think about case complexity and the need to get it right first time or the reasons for failure etc. Your treatments should be entered as a conventional RCT so you receive the appropriate credit for the procedure towards your targets.
