Frequently Asked Question

Why isn't my treatment counting towards my targets?
Last Updated 4 months ago

There are a number of common reasons that a treatment isn't being counted, so please check each of the following carefully:

Your grade is not high enough

Only treatments with at tutor grade at or above the target grade will count towards your targets.

It is not the right kind of procedure

Targets are set up to count specific kinds of procedures. Only treatments of the kinds listed under the "Procedures" list at the top of the target details page will be included in the total.

NB You should record all of the treatments you carry out, even if you do not have a target for them; they are part of your overall learning and will be included in your record of achievement. Additionally, they may (at a tutors discretion) be used to compensate for missing a similar target. However, if you feel a procedure is missing from a target in error and that it should be included, please contact the help desk and it will be discussed for possible inclusion.

It is not on the right clinic

Some targets can be achieved on any clinic whereas others are deliberately set up to only count entries on specific clinics. Only the treatments carried out on the clinics listed in the "Clinics" section of the target details page will be counted. This is so we can ensure that the right supervision is available and that you have the opportunity to learn from a relevant specialist in the field.

If you have carried out a procedure on a different clinic (e.g. perform a restoration on a Periodontology clinic) you can show this by clicking the "Include compensatory" tab in the target details page. This will then include treatments performed on other clinics. Your tutors can, at their discretion, choose to include treatments performed elsewhere as towards your targets.

However, if you feel that a clinic is missing from the list in error, please contact the relevant programme office so it can be discussed for possible inclusion.

NB: You must enter your treatments in the area of the Portfolio that corresponds with the clinic you undertook the treatment. In your professional life it is essential that your records represent where and how tasks were undertaken. Your books are randomly audited and any attempt to misrepresent where you undertook a procedure in order to meet targets will be regarded as a professionalism issue which may result in a professionalism form being issued and/or referral to the Dental School Progress Committee.

You have not followed one of the rules

The targets can also have a number of additional conditions applied e.g.

  • must be performed on a child patient;
  • must have have a tooth or surface(s) of a tooth selected;
  • treatment must be performed on specific teeth;
  • must be performed within a range of dates etc.

These are listed under the "Rules" section on the target details page. Check carefully that the treatment you have entered is meeting all of these rules.

If you have followed all of the above guidance and you are still not sure why your treatment is not counting, please contact the help desk.
